Rest
Does one ever get enough rest? I was listening to a podcast by Michael Hyatt yesterday where he mentions that we should follow the “Surge – Rest – Surge – Rest” pattern. That’s where you work intensely for a while and then take a break. {Rinse and repeat for the rest of your life! :)}
I know well the effect of surging for too long without a break – it’s called burnout. I also know that I’m prone to laziness if I decide to take an undeserved break. So, I’m still working on finding the balance – the surge-rest ratio that works for me.
I’ve found, however, that when I turn to entertainment for a break – television, facebook, a movie, a game… I rarely feel rested enough. On the other hand, a short 15 minute power nap gives me the break I need to keep me going the rest of the day. I’ve also found that reading a good book is a wonderful way to wind down late in the day.
All that being said, I strongly believe that in this busy world we live in, we can quite forget our source of rest. True rest can be found in one place alone – the presence of God.
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5)
Did you take some time to rest at God’s feet today? You really do need it. And If you’re feeling weary and burdened by the cares in your life today, take heart. Your Father is waiting for you to run into His open arms. In Him you will find rest.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

did you know that you pointed this out? (you probably did – but it caught me by surprise).
a key component of being able to rest is having our hope placed in/on God. that’s a pretty powerful truth as i’m sitting here mulling it over. if our hope is in Him, we have the freedom to desist, at least for moment. when our hope is in ourselves (whether we admit it or not – whether it is entirely there or partly there), any downtime might just be lost time we can never regain or make up…
really great thoughts, sheena!
So true. I’ve rebelled so many times, gone after good things and neglected the best but you’re right. Resting in God is the truest rest and we need it. Blessings to you!
Wonderful reminder. Sometimes I find I need to rest after resting also, espcially when my resting breaks include social media. Balancing the surge-rest pattern is definitely key, while resting in Him for real. Great post! ~Tanya M., from FMF, linked up after you.
I hadn’t considered lately that the things I am doing to rest are NOT restful. Hmm, thanks for making me think about this and reorder my ideas today
I couldn’t agree more that some kinds of fun are really not restful to me with internet surfing which I love at the top of that list. Thanks for the reminder.
